FY 2024 HUD HMIS Data Standards
HUD will be releasing the new Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 HUD HMIS Data Standards, which take effect Sunday, October 1st, 2023. Refer to this 2024 Data Standards Informational Guide document for brief overview on the changes HUD has made since the last release in 2022.
Trainings and other resources are being provided here to help prepare users for these changes.

Although these presentations were developed prior to the implementation of the FY2022 Data Standards, the information provided here is still relevant in understanding what the data standards are, why they are important, and how they impact Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) data and reporting.
Introduction to the HUD Data Standards
(Recorded August 2021 - MCAH Lunch and Learn Series)
This session was open to all HMIS end users. During the session, MCAH provided an overview of the HMIS Data Standards and detailed their function in the HMIS. They demonstrated how to read through the Data Standards Manual and explained the importance of reviewing and interpreting the standards.
HUD Data Standards 101

The HMIS Data Standards represent the foundation for all the data contained within the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to
Classify the HMIS Universal Data Elements (UDEs) and Program Specific Data Elements;
Define who each data element applies to and when it should be collected;
Describe a minimum of three Data Collection Best Practices;
Locate HUD Resources/Materials.

One of the most significant changes to the 2022 Data Standards was the change in responses and logic to the Gender Identity question. The Ruth Ellis Center has experience working with the LGBTQ+ youth and young adults with an emphasis on young people of color, experiencing homelessness, involved in the child welfare system, and/or experiencing barriers to health and wellbeing. The material covered in these trainings includes critical information that will help case managers with conducting client centered interviews that will answer the new questions around gender in HMIS.
